A heroic security guard’s life takes a devastating turn after saving a suicidal girl, only to face job loss and criticism from the very family he helped.
At the age of 28, Qu Yan was employed as a security guard at a hospital in China’s Jilin Province in 2022 when his life took a devastating turn. While on duty, he learned that a young girl had climbed to the fourth-floor balcony of the building and was threatening to end her life.
Qu Yan quickly rushed to the scene, where hospital employees were frantically trying to create a makeshift net to catch the girl when she jumped. Before they could finish, the girl leaped from the balcony, and Qu Yan instinctively sprinted forward to catch her in his arms.
The force of the impact caused Qu Yan to suffer multiple fractures throughout his body, including his arms and spine. Though he managed to save the girl’s life, he was left with debilitating injuries that could potentially lead to permanent paralysis. The girl, on the other hand, only sustained minor injuries and was discharged from the hospital within days.
Nearly a year after the incident, Qu Yan’s situation has not improved. He remains confined to a hospital bed, and his family struggles to afford the necessary medication. To make matters worse, Qu Yan lost his job soon after saving the girl’s life, as he could no longer work.
When his family contacted the security company he had worked for, requesting assistance with his medical bills, they were denied help. The family could not afford a lawyer to pursue a legal battle.
In a shocking twist, the family of the girl Qu Yan saved responded with anger and threats when contacted. In a video posted on BiliBili, the girl’s mother can be heard accusing Qu Yan’s family of causing her child’s current condition, saying they would be held responsible for the rest of their lives if anything happened to her.
Qu Yan’s heartbreaking story has touched the hearts of millions in China, with many offering financial support and expressing outrage at the girl’s family for their heartless response. As one commenter questioned, “It’s so infuriating, why not be grateful?”
