Police in California were on the hunt on Wednesday for two suspects who were captured on surveillance video attempting to steal a bank’s drive-thru ATM using a forklift.
The Sheriff’s Office in Sacramento County has announced that they are offering a reward of up to $1,000 for any information that leads to the apprehension of those responsible for the incident at a Safe Credit Union located on Watt Avenue in North Sacramento on Aug. 2.
The video footage that was released by the police shows an unidentified person driving a forklift into one of the bank’s drive-thru ATM lanes.
When the forklift momentarily disappears from view, a white pickup truck is observed backing into the vicinity.
The driver of the forklift then reappears, crashing into the ATM and tipping it onto its side.
Before the video clip concludes, the operator of the forklift punctures the ATM, leading to sparks, as he attempts to maneuver it towards the waiting truck.
“After the suspect operating the forklift knocked the ATM off of its platform, they eventually loaded it in the bed of the pickup truck,” said the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
“The second suspect drove away with it; but during the course of their ‘getaway,’ the ATM machine fell out of the truck in the middle of Watt Avenue, causing an unrelated traffic crash,” the police added further. “Both suspects fled the scene and have yet to be identified or located.”
This incident came on the heels of another episode in which two men evaded police custody after being caught in the act of trying to pry a Bank of America ATM from its location with their pickup truck in Hingham, Massachusetts.
These two individuals had attached a chain to the drive-up ATM on July 28 and were endeavoring to yank it away, as stated by the police.
Upon the arrival of the police, the culprits hastily left the scene and jumped into their white 2007 Cadillac Escalade EXT.
Despite a rapid pursuit by the officers, the suspects successfully escaped after abandoning the vehicle.
The police have confirmed that no funds were taken from that particular Bank of America ATM, but the machine did suffer significant damage due to the robbery attempt.
Just a few weeks prior, a daring group of three was recorded on video as they yanked an ATM out of a grocery store in Philadelphia with a stolen U-Haul truck, as reported by the authorities.
The criminals backed the pilfered U-Haul box truck up to the store’s entrance and attached a chain to the ATM located in the store’s vestibule, the police detailed.
Although the truck and the ATM were later found, the exact amount of money stolen remains uncertain.
