A 22-year-old woman in North Carolina has been arrested for allegedly killing her 10-year-old sister, stabbing the child multiple times inside of their family home before dragging her body into the backyard. Kaneijah Zyir Bradley was taken into custody on Tuesday and charged with the murder of her younger sister, authorities announced.
According to a news release from the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, deputies at about 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday responded to a residence located in the 2000 block of Beaverdam Road regarding a mother reporting her 10-year-old child missing.
Upon arriving at the scene, first responders learned that the girl’s mother had located the missing child in the backyard of the home. Deputies on the scene said the little girl “appeared to be deceased.”
“Further investigation revealed that the child had been stabbed multiple times and was in fact deceased,” the sheriff’s office wrote in the release. “Through investigation by Investigators, it is believed that the victim had been stabbed inside the home and moved outside to the rear of the home.”
Investigators quickly homed in on a suspect and placed Bradley under arrest for murder. She is currently being housed in the Halifax County Detention Center without bond. She is scheduled to appear in county district court on Jan. 25.
The sheriff’s office said that the motive for alleged attack “is unclear at this time” as the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are asking anyone with information relevant to the case to contact Lieutenant R. Somogyi at (252) 583-8201.
“This is such a sad incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family,” Sheriff Tyree Davis said in a statement.
At the time of the attack, Bradley was out on bond after being arrested twice last year for two other alleged attacks involving weapons.
The first involved Bradley allegedly cutting her boyfriend with a box cutter during a domestic violence incident. The sheriff’s office said that deputies on April 22, 2023, responded to a home on Christmas Road in Enfield, North Carolina, regarding a report of an assault and the theft of a car.
The victim told deputies that he and his girlfriend, whom he identified as Bradley, were driving when she suddenly “pulled out a box cutter and cut him with it.”
“The assault caused a gash on the victim’s lip, so he pulled over and exited the vehicle,” the sheriff’s office wrote in the news release. “The victim then stated when he exited the vehicle, his girlfriend left him on the side of the highway.”
A then-21-year-old Bradley was soon located. Authorities said she was “still in possession of the box cutter and the vehicle” and noted that she “also had blood on her clothing from the incident.” She was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and larceny of a motor vehicle. She is scheduled to appear in court for that incident on Jan. 29.
In August 2023, Bradley was charged with one count each of assault with a deadly weapon against a law enforcement official, simple assault, and resisting an officer, local NBC affiliate WITN reported. Records show she is scheduled to appear in court on the August charges on Feb. 24.
