In an extraordinary display of heroism, a Michigan seventh-grader took control of his school bus when the driver suddenly lost consciousness, potentially averting disaster.
Superintendent Robert Livernois of Warren Consolidated Schools, which serves the Michigan cities of Warren, Sterling Heights, and Troy, shared the remarkable story on Facebook.
He wrote, “During the transport of students home from Carter Middle School after school today, one of our bus drivers became lightheaded and lost consciousness while the bus was traveling on Masonic Boulevard near Bunert Road.”
Without missing a beat, a seventh-grade male student noticed the driver’s distress, rushed to the front of the bus, and safely brought it to a halt. Superintendent Livernois praised the boy’s actions, saying, “The actions of the student who helped stop the bus made all the difference today, and I could not be prouder of his efforts.”
The Warren Police and Fire Departments responded promptly, assisting the driver and ensuring the students boarded another bus to continue their journey home.
Although the school district did not reveal the student’s identity, Warren Councilman Jonathan Lafferty took to Facebook to commend the young hero by name, stating, “The City of Warren is very proud of our 7th Grade Hero Dillon Reeves! This young man jumped into action when his school bus driver experienced a medical emergency, bringing the bus to a stop and avoiding what could have been a very tragic accident. We are very proud of you for your heroic actions!”
Ireta Marie Reeves, identified as Dillon’s stepmother by The Detroit News, shared on Facebook that if Dillon hadn’t intervened, the school bus might have crashed into a car and a house along its path. She recounted the events, saying, “On the way home from school today, Dillon’s bus driver passed out at the wheel, and Dillon jumped into action and stopped the bus, saving all the kids, a car, and a house it could have hit in its path!! He is the local HERO!!”
Dillon’s bravery and quick thinking did not go unnoticed, as his principal, along with the Warren Police and Fire Departments, arrived at the scene, and everyone expressed immense pride in his actions. Ireta Marie Reeves also mentioned that the bus driver was taken to a hospital via ambulance.
In a separate post, she attributed Dillon’s courageous and swift response to divine intervention, stating, “He has no idea the amount of people who are so proud of him today.”
