In a heart-wrenching turn of events, a disagreement between a father and his 19-year-old son culminated in a devastating tragedy.
Lyndon Turner, like many teenagers, found himself involved in a minor car accident. However, this particular incident would have far-reaching consequences, as his father held him responsible in the harshest possible way – a decision he can never undo.
Lyndon’s father became convinced that his son’s minor accident was the result of cannabis use, a subject they had argued about previously. The father-son relationship had deteriorated significantly after the death of Lyndon’s mother, creating a volatile environment between them.
Following the car accident, the father decided to kick Lyndon out of the house. Believing his son would find refuge at a friend’s residence, he was tragically mistaken.
Instead of seeking shelter at a friend’s place, Lyndon embarked on a 6-mile journey on foot, eventually falling asleep in Chobham Common, a nature reserve. It was here that he tragically succumbed to hypothermia, as confirmed by assistant coroner Karen Henderson.
Henderson stated, “I am satisfied he found himself in Chobham Common on the night of December 1, 2020, that he fell asleep during that period of time, and given the time of year, it resulted in significant hypothermia, which is directly causative of his death.”
Lyndon’s toxicology report did reveal indications of “frequent or chronic use of cannabis” in his system. In her summary, Henderson informed the court:
“I accept the cause of death provided by the pathologist to the court as ketoacidosis complicating hypothermia. I am satisfied on the balance of probabilities that Lyndon was a regular user of cannabis,” she continued. “There were some difficulties with his family circumstances and due to a recent car accident, and concerns of his father that he had been using cannabis, he was asked not to remain at home. Sadly, he did not choose to find somewhere else to live.”
This tragic story serves as a stark reminder of the need for understanding and compassion within families, particularly when dealing with conflicts and challenging circumstances.
