I have an aunt and uncle who live out west and have a lot of open land around their house. This means that my uncle Robert has a lot of space for a target range that for a private amateur one, rivals any professional one I have ever seen.
You could fire a rifle in any direction standing on the roof of his house and the round would come back down to Earth long before it got near any of the fences surrounding the property.
My wife and I like to spend a week or two out there every year. You can have all the beaches you want but there is just something about green grass as far as the eye can see.
Oh yea, the target range. He always like to surprise me by unveiling a new purchase every time I come to visit. This time he premiered his Smith and Wesson 627 Performance Center to me and I have to say I am pretty damned impressed.
The first thing that I noticed about the Smith and Wesson 627 Performance Center is that the thing is absolutely stunning looking.

Despite the barrel having more of a contemporary look, the stainless and wood gives you the look of a firearm from days gone by.
And the wood grips. My uncle Robert simply would not stop talking about the wood grips.
It’s got good sights and on the whole handles pretty good.
I finally got to fire the Smith and Wesson 627 Performance Center after he sang the gun’s praises for what seemed like forever. Even when we were using .357 rounds on my uncle’s firing range there wasn’t a whole lot of recoil.
That doesn’t mean that the thing doesn’t shake you like you’re a can of paint being mixed at a hardware. I’m more used to it than some folks might be so if you are looking to purchase this particular firearm you better keep an extremely tight grip on this one when firing.
Personally speaking, if I owned this one I would switch out the grips for groove-less grips. That being said, if this was going to be my daily carry weapon I would have to think long and hard about whether or not to switching to rubber grips entirely.
Reason being on the thinking long and hard is that while rubber grips would be more practical, the wood just looks so cool when you’re just looking at the thing.
Overall though, I would say that this gun would be an excellent purchase. Even though it’s a little on the beefy side at forty-four ounces, it actually conceals pretty well. If you’re thinking about carrying a full-sized revolver this would be a damn fine option.
Depending on your skill level as far as handling firearms, this one doesn’t need very much modification out of the box.
The one big problem that my uncle mentioned with this particular gun is that there isn’t much in the way of availability for holsters that fit the thing. You’re probably gonna have to get one custom made and that might be a little bit of a wait.
All in all, I would say anyone looking for a revolver would do well to give the Smith and Wesson 627 Performance Center a try.
