A Nevada teenager is behind bars after killing two members of her family because she was uncontrollably compelled to kill, police say.
Mashenka Ann Marie Reid, 17, is charged with two counts of open murder with a deadly weapon and one count of attempted murder with a deadly weapon, according to Washoe County Sheriff’s Office records reviewed by Law&Crime.
Police say Reid’s father and brother were shot to death, while her younger sister managed to survive the domestic massacre.
The incident occurred on Feb. 9 at an apartment on Silver State Parkway in the North Valleys neighborhood of Reno, according to court documents in the case obtained by the Reno Gazette-Journal. Reid is alleged to have made one of two 911 calls that day.
“I shot my dad,” the girl allegedly told a dispatcher during one of those emergency calls. “I shot my brother. My brother is dead.”
The dispatcher allegedly asked if either victim was breathing. To which Reid allegedly replied that she did not know. The accused murderess said she dropped the murder weapon, a Walther PPS, inside their residence, according to court records.
“I just couldn’t resist the urge to kill somebody,” Reid allegedly told the dispatcher when asked further what happened.
Officers were en route to the scene after a neighbor also called 911 to report muffled gunshots and what were seemingly cries for help.
The first officer arrived at around 4:17 p.m. and detained the teenager on the floor. Then, the grim discoveries were made.
The accused killer’s younger brother was shot in the head, police said, and described in a charging document as “an approximately 4 or 5-year-old male juvenile lying on a couch in the living room.”
Reid’s father was found dead inside the garage, according to law enforcement. He had been shot multiple times in the chest and back. Emergency medical services personnel arrived at around 4:30 p.m., and both victims were declared dead.
The handgun was allegedly where Reid said she dropped it. Reid’s younger sister was found alive after an officer kicked in a door in the back, police say.
Reid was initially taken to the Reno Police Department headquarters, according to local CBS affiliate KTVN. There, she was read a youth version of the typical Miranda statement and asked if she wanted to talk. The girl allegedly invoked her right to remain silent.
She was initially arrested on just two open murder charges — meaning her ultimate charge could be murder in the first or second degree or manslaughter. Over the weekend, Reid was also charged with attempted murder, according to local NBC affiliate KRNV.
The names of the victims have yet to be released by the Washoe County Medical Examiner.
Reid is in the county jail without bail. It is unclear if she is currently represented by counsel.
