According to Fox News Digital, a mother in Oklahoma took matters into her own hands when she found an HIV-positive youth sports coach sexually abusing her young daughter inside their home.
The suspect, Donovan Scott Sheppard, 39, had been involved in a bar fight on January 13 and was later picked up by the mother.
Sheppard had been living with the mother and daughter at the time of the incident.
He had previously coached youth baseball in the area. After the horrifying discovery, the 12-year-old girl informed investigators that Sheppard had raped her.
The girl was asleep when her mother and Sheppard returned home after the bar fight. While her mother slept, Sheppard allegedly entered her room and assaulted her.
At some point during the night, the mother woke up and caught Sheppard in the act of raping her daughter.
The authorities were promptly notified and upon arriving at the scene, they found the mother holding Sheppard at gunpoint as reported by witnesses.
The minor alleged that Sheppard had previously raped her multiple times, starting when she was 11 years old. One of the incidents occurred on her 12th birthday, as per the authorities.
After the incident, Sheppard was arrested and taken into custody.
He is currently held at the Cleveland County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
Fox News Digital reported that he faces charges including lewd or indecent proposals or acts to a child, engaging in a pattern of criminal offenses, exposing others to AIDS, rape in the first degree, and rape by instrumentation.
According to statistics from the National Center for Victims of Crime, approximately 1 in 5 girls experience child sex abuse while 1 in 20 boys are victims as well.
The report also highlighted that within a one-year period in the United States, around 16% of individuals aged 14-17 have been sexually abused.
Over their lifetime, this number rises to 28% among U.S. youth aged between 14 and 17.
