The announcement by legendary “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek in 2019 that he was battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer left countless devoted viewers in a state of shock.
As Trebek shared the news of his health condition, the pressing concern amongst everyone was how he would continue his responsibilities as a host as his health condition worsened.
The latest episode of the “This is Jeopardy!” podcast provided an opportunity for the game show’s executives and Trebek’s family to share some heartfelt memories about their time with the television legend prior to his passing.
Rocky Schmidt, who served as the longtime supervising producer for “Jeopardy!”, recounted the struggles Trebek endured as he tried to sustain his everyday work routine amidst his cancer battle.
Schmidt revealed that during one of his check-ins between tapings, he discovered Trebek in his dressing room, “on the floor, crying in pain.”
Reflecting on Trebek’s fight with the illness and the effects of medication, Schmidt said, “When he was sick and taking medication… the pain the man had… you could watch him and it’s like ‘he’s not going to make it to the conference room table,’” a reference to the pre-show meetings.
Schmidt also voiced his worries regarding Trebek’s ability to continue with the show as he battled against his deteriorating health condition.
The revealing podcast interview was shared by the official “Jeopardy!” Instagram account on their social media platform.
