A cellphone video captured a shocking incident at Normandy High School in St. Louis where a female student assaulted a 65-year-old teacher in the hallway.
The video shows the student dragging the science teacher on the floor while a crowd gathered around them, cheering and making noise. According to KSDK-TV, the teacher seemed to be attempting to restrain the student as she kicked and punched her.
Greg Stanton, who is in a relationship with the teacher, stated that she had asked the student to wait until she left class to retrieve her book bag. However, disregarding this request, the student forcefully pushed past the teacher, grabbed her bag, and proceeded to attack her.
Following this altercation, the teacher was taken to the hospital for treatment. Though she remains in pain, loved ones have expressed hope that she will recover fully.
“She’s banged up pretty bad … I’m at work, and I get this video … She was circled up,” Stanton told KSDK.
It seems that there are at least two cellphone videos capturing the incident. One unedited video shows the student repeatedly striking the teacher in the head with her hand around 20 times.
As they were separated, another student, who was wearing an orange jacket, pushed the teacher back onto the floor while she tried to approach the student who had been attacking her.
Stanton, speaking to the station, mentioned that after the altercation, the teacher was unable to speak and was crying as she couldn’t comprehend why it had happened.
According to KSDK, law enforcement will be pursuing criminal charges against the student through St. Louis County Juvenile Courts.
Normandy Schools issued the following statement, the station reported:
The district is addressing an incident that occurred this morning involving a confrontation between a teacher and a student. The administration is taking this matter seriously and is fully cooperating with local law enforcement. Additionally, we have launched an internal investigation to gather all the necessary facts surrounding the incident, and appropriate actions will be taken based on the findings of these investigations.
