Burke Ramsey, the brother of JonBenét Ramsey, speaks out for the first time since her passing twenty-one years ago.

It marks 25 years since JonBenét Ramsey, a 6-year-old beauty queen, was found strangled in the basement of her parents’ Colorado home back in 1996, and the case captivated the world. Almost a generation later, the murder remains unsolved, but the new two-hour 20/20 special interview sheds new light on the case. Her older brother, Burke Ramsey, who was 9 at the time of JonBenet’s death, is speaking out about the murder for the first time in an in-depth interview in a new 20/20 TV special.

The rich parents of JonBenét, John, and Pasty, were initially considered to be the key suspects in the case, although they adamantly maintained their innocence.

John Andrew, JonBenét’s older half-brother, was not living at the home and was 20 years old at the time.

However, the now 45-year-old – who was one of three children from John Ramsey’s first marriage – steadfastly believes that his dad and step-mom had nothing to do with the death.

Burke, John Andrew’s half-brother who was residing at the Ramsey home, is presumed to be innocent of the crime, according to John Andrew. Some believed Burke killed JonBenét before their parents hid the crime.

Lou Smit, a retired homicide detective who was called back into service to look into the killing of the young beauty queen, had John Andrew on his side.

Smit was initially employed by the prosecution but left the case after concluding that JonBenét’s murder was the result of an outside intrusion.

He later worked as a freelance investigator for the Ramsey family to help prove their innocence.

On the 20/20 special, John Andrew said, Lou Smit was a legendary detective.” John Andrew made comprehensive video diaries detailing his investigation – some of which will air for the first time on 20/20.

ABC News Legal Analyst Jami Lloyd said in the 20/20 preview clip, “the evidence he gathered over the years is a virtual encyclopedia of the case.”

Smit tragically passed away in 2010 before he could identify the murderer. However, he gave his family, who are carrying out the investigation, a list of possible suspects.

John Andrew is confident that Smit’s research, along with improvements in DNA technology, will finally bring the murderer to light. “I think it is really important for people to understand that this case can be solved. We will find this killer,” he triumphantly declares during the 20/20 special.

The mother of the murdered child, Patsy Ramsey, tragically passed away in 2006 before she could be conclusively found not guilty of the crime and have the charges against her dropped.

Investigators found that they were not responsible for the young girl’s death, and they were exonerated of all charges in the case in 2008. They were the prime suspects in the case for more than a decade, although the young beauty queen’s parents claimed to be innocent of the crime.
