In today’s modern society, people enjoy unprecedented access to information, connection, and safety. However, as America in 2023 becomes more inclusive and accepting of people from all backgrounds, we also face the challenge of updating our language and cultural references. The politically correct movement aims to eliminate offensive language and derogatory slang, scrutinizing everything from our daily speech to classic literature – including the iconic James Bond novels.
Ian Fleming Publications recently submitted the James Bond series to sensitivity reader professionals, intending to update the novels to appeal to today’s more diverse and inclusive audience. While these changes may be well-intentioned, some argue that they represent an overreach of political correctness and the sanitization of literature.
The original James Bond novels contain offensive language and character names, such as “P*ssy Galore” and “Dr. Holly Goodhead,” which have been deemed inappropriate for modern readers. Additionally, the books’ portrayal of Black and African American characters and the use of the N-word has been criticized. The sensitivity readers have also called for changes to the sex scenes in the novels to make them more palatable to contemporary readers.
Furthermore, the James Bond novels include derogatory phrases about Asian people and outdated terms like “blithering women” and “man’s work.” The books also reference homosexuality as a “stubborn disability,” despite overwhelming evidence that sexual orientation is innate and not a disability. However, this reference will not be removed from the novels.
Since sensitivity readers cannot rewrite the entire book, each updated copy of the James Bond novels will include a disclaimer warning readers about the offensive themes and mature content. The disclaimer states, “This book was written at a time when terms and attitudes which might be considered offensive by modern readers were commonplace.”
While acknowledging and learning from the past is essential for progress, it is crucial to consider whether the alterations made to classic literature, such as the James Bond series, are a necessary step towards inclusivity or an infringement on artistic expression. We must ask ourselves if the removal of controversial content erases history and artistic intent or truly makes literature more accessible to diverse audiences.
Instead of erasing the past, we should encourage open dialogue and critical examination of these works, appreciating them as products of their time while acknowledging the progress society has made. By engaging in thoughtful discussion and fostering understanding, we can achieve a more inclusive and educated society without sacrificing artistic integrity.
