Chris Rock didn’t mince words when he responded to Will Smith’s “apology” after he slapped him at the Oscars.
In late July 2022, Will Smith finally publically addressed “the slap heard around the world.”
To start the video, Smith read a question out loud.
“Why didn’t you apologize to Chris in your acceptance speech?”
“That point fogged out me,” the 53-year-old responded, The Daily Wire reported. “It’s all fuzzy. I’ve reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk and when he is, he will reach out.”
“I just didn’t realize, and you know, I wasn’t thinking about how many people got hurt in that moment,” Smith said later in the video. “So, I want to apologize to Chris’s mother. I want to apologize to Chris’s family, specifically [Chris Rock’s younger brother] Tony Rock. You know, we had a great relationship. You know, Tony Rock was my man. And this is probably irreparable.”
“I spent the last three months replaying and understanding the nuances and the complexities of what happened in that moment, and I’m not going to try to unpack all of that right now,” the actor added. “But I can say to all of you now there is no part of me that thinks that was the right way to behave in that moment.”
Rock didn’t post a public apology but during a show in Atlanta, Georgia said, “Everybody is trying to be a f***ing victim,” Rock said on Friday, People magazine reported. “If everybody claims to be a victim, then nobody will hear the real victims.”
“Even me getting smacked by Suge Smith,” the comedian said. “I went to work the next day, I got kids. Anyone who says words hurt has never been punched in the face,” Rock joked.
Rock isn’t wrong, if Smith were actually sorry, he would have apologized immediately. Will Smith’s career is in the dumps and now he’s trying to play the victim for sympathy.
