During a NATO summit in Warsaw, Poland this morning, President Obama addressed last night’s shootings in Texas and swore that the perpetrator would be held “fully accountable.”
The president said at the presser that he’s been in touch with Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings to give him sympathies for the attack that left five police officers dead, others wounded, and a #BlackLivesMatter demonstration in a state of panicked mayhem. Obama has been condemning the recent acts of supposed police brutality against African American men this past week, but he used this speech to promise justice to those who target cops.
“Anyone involved in the senseless murders will be held fully accountable,” Obama said. he went on to say that there was “no possible justification” for the “vicious, calculated and despicable attack on law enforcement.”
After further addressing the racial disparities of criminal justice, Obama eventually shifted his speech to argue that the violence might have been less catastrophic if the sniper(s) responsible didn’t have access to heavy weaponry.
“We also know when people are armed with powerful weapons, unfortunately, it makes attacks like these more deadly and more tragic,” Obama said. “The entire city of Dallas feels this to its core. We are grieving with them. I ask you say a prayer for the officers and their families.”
